According to CNN, on February 11th local time, a non partisan monitoring organization called "American Oversight" filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington D.C., demanding access to records from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
According to the report, the organization believes that although Musk, the head of the "Government Efficiency Department," had promised to achieve "maximum transparency" in departmental actions, in reality, the department's structural design determines that its communications will be kept confidential.
The lawyer of the supervisory organization pointed out that the "Government Efficiency Department" should be bound by the Freedom of Information Law and must accelerate the processing of relevant requests in accordance with relevant regulations and rules.
The White House spokesperson previously stated that the Department of Government Efficiency is subject to the Presidential Records Act. According to the regulations of the National Archives and Records Administration of the United States, documents that fall under the jurisdiction of the Presidential Records Act cannot be released through the Freedom of Information Act for at least five years after the end of the current government term.
The report also pointed out that this case may be one of the first lawsuits to challenge the Trump administration's claim that the "Government Efficiency Department" is not bound by the Freedom of Information Act.
